Indigo Cliff

Chinese Splashed-Color Landscape

A cliff face in deep indigo and malachite, falling to a single boat at its foot. Vertical, framed, and built to be seen from a doorway.

Most of the sheet is color, laid in layers so the darkest blues sit in the crevices and the greens catch on the edges. The scale only becomes clear at the bottom, where two figures in a boat give the rock its height.

Because the composition is a single tall mass, it holds its own on a narrow wall: the end of a hallway, the return beside a fireplace, the wall you see first from the front door.
