What You Are Buying

What they are

• Painted by hand. Every work is ink and color applied with a brush to paper. Nothing on this site is a print, a giclée, a photomechanical reproduction or a hand-touched print. Under magnification you will see brush marks, pooling and the fiber of the paper, not a dot pattern.
• Contemporary. They are recently made paintings in traditional Chinese styles: blue-and-green landscape, splashed color, ink landscape, flower painting, horses, figures. We do not assign a date to any work, and none should be taken as old.
• Decorative. They are made and sold to be hung in homes and interiors. We think they are good paintings. We do not present them as fine art with a market, and they are not investments.
• One of a kind. Each is a single, unique painting. There are no editions, numbered or otherwise.
• Ready to hang. Each arrives framed or mounted as photographed, with hanging hardware fitted.

What they are not

• Not antiques. We make no claim about age and none should be inferred from style, paper tone, mounting or wear.
• Not attributed. We do not name an artist for any work. The inscriptions, signatures and red seals that appear on many of the paintings are part of the composition, in the traditional manner, and are not offered by us as a record of authorship. Please do not buy on the assumption that a seal identifies a known painter.
• Not "after", "school of" or "in the manner of" anyone. Where we say a work is in the Dunhuang manner or the blue-and-green manner, we are describing a style, not suggesting a source.
• Not certified. No certificate of authenticity is supplied, because there is nothing to certify beyond what is written here. Your invoice describes the work in the same terms as this page.

Measurements, color and condition

Measurements are given for the painted image and for the framed or mounted whole, in centimeters and inches, and are accurate to within about a centimeter. Colors on screen depend on your display; if a particular tone matters, ask for a photograph in daylight next to something of known color. Handmade paper has minor irregularities of surface, and hand mounting occasionally leaves a faint ripple; neither is a defect. Anything we would call a fault is described on the work's page or told to you before you pay.

If we have got something wrong

If a work arrives and is not as described here and on its page, tell us within fourteen days and we will collect it at our cost and refund you in full. That applies whatever the reason, and it applies to trade buyers too.
