Zhong Kui with an Attendant

Chinese figure painting, hanging scroll

Zhong Kui, the demon-queller, in a billowing red robe, striding with a small green demon at his heels. A tall hanging scroll with an inscription at the top.

Zhong Kui is the fierce, bearded figure who keeps bad spirits out of the house, and pictures of him have traditionally hung near the door. Here he is all red robe and black boots, with his demon carrying a sprig behind him. The inscription at the top is an auspicious phrase; a group of red seals sits beside it.

A tall scroll wants a tall wall: an entrance hall, a stairwell, the wall at the end of a corridor. It hangs from its cord and can be rolled and put away for a season.

Described as we find it. We make no claim about age or authorship.
